  • Bodriggy Youth Speaks team does it again!

    Tue 20 Feb 2024

Please see this lovely write up from the Mounts Bay Rotary Club about yesterday's Youth Speaks Area Finals:

What do “Greek and Norse Gods” have in common with “My Future: My Choice”? Well, they were the topics for discussion chosen by Year 6 pupils in Mousehole School and Bodriggy Academy at the Area round of Youth Speaks today held at Penwith College in Penzance. Both schools now go through to the District Final (the whole of Cornwall and Devon) at Tavistock College on 2nd March.

    Congratulations to both teams!

Amongst other topics discussed by teams were: artificial intelligence, SAS (students against sewage), and Pineapple - does it belong on a pizza? This was the second round of the competition, so all seven teams participating today did really well. The standard of public speaking was, as usual, very high.

We wish both teams good luck in the next round.

The girls were drawn 7th, so had a nervous wait to perform their speech. The competition was tough, and the judges had a very difficult job to do. After a long wait, the decision was made: Bodriggy and Mousehole teams were the winners!

Eliza, Keiana and Fallon you have made Bodriggy Academy VERY proud, and you should be VERY proud of all that you have achieved.

  • My Brilliant Place to be Me!

    Wed 07 Feb 2024

On Wednesday Mrs Henshall and Mrs Hughes took a small group of pupils to celebrate the launch of ‘My Brilliant Place to be Me!’ at the Hall for Cornwall.

This is an exciting new journal created by Cornwall's HeadStart Kernow Team, that is aimed at supporting children’s mental health and emotional well-being. It is a workbook created for children between the ages 8- 11 years to use to be able to record, explore and express their thoughts, feelings and ideas about how it feels to be me.

The children received special invitations, and on arrival were meet with lots of colourful creative activities to take part in. They enjoyed a wide array of making, storytelling and treasure hunting.

Two of our pupils were also brave enough to be interviewed by BBC spotlight!

  • Reading Rocks!

    Wed 07 Feb 2024

Today, our reading champions got to meet Heather from Reading Rocks who supplies our book subscription. Heather interviewed the children to collect their thoughts about the subscription.

Every half term we receive a box of new books which contains exciting new titles which are sometimes even signed by the authors. The champions enjoy unwrapping the books, reading the blurbs and delivering the books to classes. There are even free gifts included! Thanks, Heather for another delivery of wonderful books. We look forward to working with you again in the near future. #ReadingRocks

  • Musical Inspiration!

    Mon 05 Feb 2024

On Monday, our children enjoyed a real treat in their celebration of music assembly. What better way to finish a block of sessions than with a live music performance from one of Hayle Academy's brilliantly talented student bands, 'The Strugglers'! The focus of the assemblies has been the role music can play in our lives, and how becoming good at playing music requires a lot of the right type of practice.

Danny, Jonas, Megan, Mitch and Ollie each explained who their musical influences are, how long they've been playing their respective instruments and played a quick demonstration solo. As lead singer and front man, Danny also fielded questions from the children expertly, sharing answering duties with his fellow band mates. To top it all, they played 3 well known covers of songs by Nirvana, The Foo Fighters and The White Stripes. The Strugglers were fantastic ambassadors for Hayle Academy, and in particular the music department, demonstrating high quality musicianship behind a kind, supportive smile. It was an assembly that the Bodriggy children will remember fondly for a very long time; several of whom have already asked about the possibility of starting music lessons themselves.

Thanks to everyone at Hayle Academy who made it possible and well done to 'The Strugglers' for inspiring the next generation of musicians!

  • Youth Speaks Success!

    Thu 01 Feb 2024

On Thursday, we took three Year Six children to Penponds School to represent Bodriggy Academy in the Rotary Club’s Youth Speaks Competition. Youth Speaks is a public speaking competition in which a team of three (chairperson, speaker, vote of thanks) present a debate in a very formal way. There were six schools competing on the day, and two would be announced to go through to the next round.

After weeks of practice, our team delivered highly polished speeches, and despite the nerves, appeared confident at all times. The speeches were judged by a team of adjudicators, and we were all delighted to find out that Bodriggy was one of the winning teams. Well done to Keiana, Eliza and Fallon who will now represent Bodriggy Academy in the next round against teams from the Penzance, Truro and Falmouth areas. We are very proud of you.
